About

From discovery to application and impact.

“My career has been defined by a recurring journey: identify an important scientific problem, develop the tools and evidence needed to understand it, and translate that knowledge into something useful.”

More than two decades of scientific experience across discovery research, biotechnology, therapeutic development, medical countermeasures and federal research programs.

Career story

A path that keeps moving from bench to impact

  1. Discovery

    Early biotechnology and biochemical research

Designed a bioreactor for continuous production of glucose-1-phosphate from starch using eggshell-powder-bound starch phosphorylases (Journal of Biotechnology, 1994).

  2. Technology

    Biotechnology innovation

Developed an efficient recombinant baculovirus expression system for high-level protein expression in insect cells — U.S. Patent 5,965,393.

  3. Discovery

    Molecular and cellular biology

Discovered the novel protein kinases VwkA and MhckD (Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2005 and 2006) and developed a method to delete two genes in a single transfection (BioTechniques, 2004).

  4. Discovery

    Cancer and vascular biology

Revealed contrasting roles of non-muscle myosin IIA and IIB in cancer cell migration and metastasis (Cancer Research, 2006), identified mechanisms of pathological microvesicle release in antiphospholipid syndrome (Blood, 2012 and 2013), and showed a kininogen fragment suppresses angiogenesis and tumor growth (FASEB Journal and Blood, 2016).

  5. Translation

    Therapeutic and nanoparticle development

Tested synthetic nanoparticles for controlling an autoimmune bleeding disorder at the Cleveland Clinic, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, anti-drug antibodies and biodistribution (Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis).

  6. Translation

    Gene therapy and viral vectors

Engineered an adeno-associated viral vector-based therapy that provides complete protection against neurotoxic nerve agents at USAMRICD (Science Translational Medicine, 2020).

  7. Leadership

Medical countermeasures and federal WMD programs

Proposed research areas — live detectors, trigger technologies and chem-biosurveillance — for DHS Research and Development, and performed chemical and biological WMD data analysis with briefings to CWMD leadership.

  8. Leadership

    Research program leadership

Conducted scientific review, coordinated stakeholders and prepared a 246-page annual report on blast overpressure and brain injury for the Defense Secretary.

  9. Impact

    Scientific communication

Senior author of a widely cited gene therapy review (Frontiers in Oncology, 2019), Associate Editor at Frontiers, and plasmid vectors shared with more than 250 laboratories through Addgene.

  10. Impact

    AI, innovation, and creative work

Today, exploring how AI can help move from information to insight, from insight to communication, and from communication to action.
